Jade Black is my pen and artist name.
I’m a mixed race British writer, artist, composer and game developer based in England.
I’ve been writing in some capacity since I was able to hold a pencil. I started writing seriously at age 16, which was… a while ago. *cue existential crisis*
I started out in flash and micro fiction, and wrote that almost exclusively for the best part of two years. I still love it today.
My first extended project was a slasher entitled Bloodsport. The first book I wrote in The Determined Ones was Dead Penstemons and it was the seventh extended project I started. It actually started out as a 400 word flash and… then it wasn’t. And I just couldn’t let go of Eterlace, so here I am.
Writing’s led me to many other forms of creativity. I wanted visuals of my characters, so I learnt to draw. I wanted to tell stories through music, so I learnt songwriting on its own, music for screen and the sound design to go with it. And also ten instruments, including doing professional vocal training.
When it came to university, I wanted to combine all of those skills into one discipline and one I’ve loved since I was child. Game design. I spent three years at the University of Hull and graduated with a First Class BA. I was accepted to do a PhD in Virtual Reality at the University of Creative Arts afterwards, but due to lack of funding this never happened.
I joined Shadow Spark Publishing in August 2023 after winning their international pitch contest #SparkPit; my trailer for Mister Nakagami resulted in me getting a full manuscript request on day one of the month long event. In February 2024 I became Shadow Spark Publishing’s Marketing Lead. I was promoted after my work as Lead Graphic Designer for the 2024 New Year’s Sale, which resulted in 151 sales in two days, though I had to shrink my role to Pinterest Account Manager when life got in the way in July 2025. In March 2026 we parted ways.
I joined Chaptore as a composer in February 2026. There’s much to come from us, so keep your eyes peeled!
